Letters My Mother Never Read

Summary:
The story, Letters My Mother Never Wrote, is written by Jerri Diane Sueck. This story is about a young girl that writes letters to her mother that she has always wished to tell her. The mother dies in a trailer fire and the girl is sent to foster care. The young girl is being treated badly in foster care and wishes she had a home to go to. When the girl was moving from home to home, the families treated her like she was a slave. She was not able to have any fun at all but take care of her step brothers and sisters. She has always wanted to be able to feel the breeze in her hair and be like a normal child. She missed her mother dearly and wrote letters to her because she could not bare to let her go and the letters were her only type of communication.
Motivational Activities:
1.      Have the children write what they have learned in the book and write what they are thankful for.
2.      Have the children write a letter to someone close to them and place them in a journal.
Reader Response Questions:
1.      Who is Jerri?
2.      Why did Jerri write the letters?
3.      Why did the fostor kids and nuns treat Jerri that type of way?
4.      What could Jerri have done to make her life a little better?
5.      What did Jerri do in the end of the story to become who she is today?
Personal Comments:
This book was very emotional and a very good book. I would recommend this book to anyone and their hearts will be lifted. The book teaches people to think about what they are thankful for and to understand the different things in life. To know what is happening around them and how to handle a situation.
